Alia

An incredible experience based on the concept of relational tourism, namely, on the interaction with local people.

Alia is on the southwestern slope of the Madonie Massif and is known by its nickname “Città Giardino” (Garden City). The modern city center dates back to the 7th century. According to archeological remains in the surrounding area, the first settlement dates back to the Arab domination

The day starts with a tour of the historic center and a visit at the Ethno-anthropological Museum and at the Photography Museum. The latter one hosts the permanent exhibition “Land and Light, from Gurfa Caves to James Turrell’s Roden Crater”. Photographs portray the impressive cave system and beehive tomb (also known as tholos tomb) of the Gurfa Caves in Alia which date back to 3.000 BC.

The next step is a visit at the largest bas-reilef in Europe. This impressive wall painting has been realized by the famous Sicilian artist Croce Taravella. It depicts scenes that take place within the cave system of the Gurfa mixing everyday life with legend. Especially the artist focuses on the Katabasis.

After a coffee break at the cheapest bar in the world, where one can have a good espresso at a moderate price of 0.20 €, it is time to meet the last surviving spinners, who still today make their creations according to traditional standards.

The last part of the day is spent at the magnificent Gurfa Caves. In a place veiled with magic and mystery, our guests will be taken to a trip back into the past centuries.

Last but not least, the day finishes in the unique sign of GOURMET with an “arrustuta” (barbecue) and a tasting of local wine and food.

A personal assistant will help you plan the adventure of a lifetime!
